In the early days of the web, everyone had a go at a homepage before losing the will to live – because every line of HTML had been compiled and edited in notepad. The slightest error and you lost the page. However, anyone could see the potential. So combining working in education and dabbling in screenwriting, why not run screenwriting workshops over the web? Hence was born the Virtual Screen Workshop, initially as part of the long defunct London Screenwriter’s Workshop and then run through Birkbeck College, University of London. Tutored by Melanie Heard-White, at the peak there were 3 workshops running a term. Alas, the interest in developing courses online in education has never lasted. People prefer face2face communication and the last course ran in 2007.
